The yearly cost is our own calculation from these prices. Starlink changes prices often – the order form shows the current offer for your address.
What it costs per year
Example for Germany: you use the holiday home from May to September, so 5 months a year. Residential all year costs 12 × €35 = €420 plus €19 shipping once. With Roam you pay only for the season: 5 × €45 = €225, and for the other 7 months the service sits in Standby for a small fee. In the first year add the Mini X and shipping, €218 together. Starlink doesn’t publish the Standby fee on its website; the app shows it before you confirm. From the second year Roam is cheaper as long as Standby costs less than about €27 a month. A third option: cancel Residential every autumn, return the kit within 30 days and order again in spring – but Starlink doesn’t hold your place, and in an area at capacity you may not be able to order Residential again.
Which one suits you
Residential suits you if Starlink stays at the holiday home – you live or work there, or you also go in winter. It is the cheapest monthly plan, in every country we checked except Bulgaria the dish is rented for €0, and data is unlimited. But it only works at the address you registered and never on the move.
Roam with a Mini X is better if you only go for the season or also want internet in a campervan, on a boat or when travelling. You buy the dish yourself, and off-season you put the plan in Standby Mode: you keep unlimited low-speed data up to 500 kbps for messages and easy reactivation. Pausing and resuming takes a few clicks in your account (Starlink help). Roam 100 GB works across Starlink’s European group – the EU, the UK, Switzerland, Norway and Iceland – with no time limit; see the Roam price in 28 countries.
Why not Standby for Residential too? According to Starlink’s help page, all Residential plans can be paused – except promotional offers and certain kit rentals. Users report that the app only offers Standby for bought kits, not rented ones, and in most of Europe the Residential kit is rented. If the app doesn’t offer the pause, you can only keep paying or cancel the plan and return the kit.
Power: the Mini X draws 25–40 W on average, the Standard 75–100 W. Running around the clock that is about 0.6–1 kWh a day for the Mini X and 1.8–2.4 kWh for the Standard (our calculation). For a holiday home without mains power the Mini X on a battery or portable power station is the best fit; it also runs from a USB-C PD power bank of at least 100 W.
Frequently asked questions
Which Starlink plan is best for a holiday home?
If you are there all year, Residential 100 Mbps is the cheapest – €35 a month in most euro countries (€28–31.50 depending on the address in France, Italy, Spain and Greece since 1 November 2026) with the dish rented for €0. If you only go for the season or also want Starlink when travelling, Roam 100 GB for €45 a month with your own Mini X for €199 is better – you pause it off-season.
Can I pause Starlink at a holiday home over winter?
Roam can: in your account you put it in Standby Mode for a small monthly fee and keep unlimited low-speed data up to 500 kbps. With Residential the pause may be missing if the kit is rented – users report that the app offers it only for bought kits, and in most of Europe the Residential kit is rented. If there is no option, you can keep paying or cancel and return the kit within 30 days. Standby doesn’t hold a Residential place either: if the area is at capacity when you want to resume, you only get another available plan.
How much does Starlink cost per year at a holiday home?
Example for Germany: Residential all year is 12 × €35 = €420 plus €19 shipping. Roam for 5 months is 5 × €45 = €225 plus Standby for the rest of the year; in the first year add the Mini X and shipping for €218. Our calculation with the starlink.com prices of 1 November 2026.
Can I take Starlink from the holiday home back home or on a trip?
Not with Residential – it only works at the address on the order. Roam works anywhere in your country, Roam 100 GB across Europe including the UK, Switzerland, Norway and Iceland with no time limit, and in motion where it is authorised.
How much power does Starlink use at a holiday home?
The Mini X draws 25–40 W on average, the Standard 75–100 W. Around the clock that is about 0.6–1 kWh a day for the Mini X and 1.8–2.4 kWh for the Standard. If you only switch Starlink on for a few hours a day, the use is correspondingly lower.
How do I get the referral reward?
Order Residential or Roam on starlink.com through the link on our Starlink page. The checkout confirms the referral; the reward – €45 in the euro area, £40 in the UK, Kč 1,000 in Czechia, zł 190 in Poland and the amounts in our Europe price table elsewhere – comes as cash or service credit once you have been a customer for at least two months. New customers only.
